Congratulations. You took the first (or next) step in becoming a game developer by opening your browser and navigating to this walkthrough. So, welcome.
In the Beginner's Guide, we're going to create a simple top-down tower defense game using both C++ and Blueprints. In the process, you're going to learn a whole lot, including how to:
- Create a new project
- Define custom classes in C++ and expose them to Blueprints
- Make enemy and tower AI
- Script a basic wave spawning mechanic
- Handle player input
- Implement resource management
- Set game rules and win conditions
- Draft a splash page
- Package and deploy your project
I chose the tower defense genre because it is less discussed/documented than other genres like shooters, bullet hells, etc. In addition, the genre comes with very clear cut win conditions and patterns, and it doesn't typically need multiplayer support (which would add a fair bit of complexity). Plus, I've always wanted to make one, so this is an excuse for me to do that!
By the end of this you should have a good grasp on the concepts listed above (and a good idea of where to dig deeper) and should feel more at ease jumping between Engine C++ and Blueprints. If you feel something is lacking or poorly explained, please let me know so I can improve it!
